Terry's Ergo Tips

Intensive mouse use can cause discomfort and musculoskeletal injuries. Most computer users find keyboard shortcuts more comfortable and faster than clicking the mouse.  Minimize mouse use!  Here are three ways to minimize mouse use:

  • Rather than keeping your fingers continually poised over your keyboard or mouse, take your hands away from them when they are not in use.

  • Keep your hand away from the mouse when you are reading a web page.  Use your keyboard space bar to advance down the web page.

  • When you are editing a document, try using keyboard short-cuts instead of the mouse.  Here are some basic editing short-cuts:

    • To highlight specific text: Hold shift and press  up, down, right, or left arrows

    • To highlight all text in document: Hold shift and press A.

    • To copy:  Press and hold Ctrl and  C keys.

    • To cut: Press and hold Ctrl and X keys.

    • To paste: Press and hold Ctrl  and V keys.

    • To undo: Press and hold Ctrl and Z keys.

    • For Mac OS keyboards- use the apple key instead of the Ctrl key.  Some keyboards may differ.
